FAQ

Understanding Lathe Cut Vinyl

Q: What's the difference between lathe cut and pressed records?

A: Lathe cutting is a direct-to-disc method where your audio is cut in real-time onto a blank vinyl record. Traditional pressed records involve multiple stages: first, an acetate is cut (similar to our lathe cutting), which then goes through electroplating to create metal stampers. These stampers are used in a hydraulic press to mass-produce hundreds of records from heated vinyl pucks. The key difference is the means of production: lathe cutting offers a direct, bespoke solution for short runs and individual records, bypassing the complex, high-volume requirements of pressing plants.

Q: Do lathe cut records sound good?

A: Yes, absolutely! When cut properly, lathe records can achieve sound quality on par with pressed records. At Loosehair, we focus on precision and quality control, ensuring crisp, clear audio. We pride ourselves on producing records free from excessive noise, delivering the high fidelity your music deserves.

Q: Is it true that lathe cut records have a shorter lifespan?

A: This can be true for records that are "embossed" rather than truly cut. However, our records are 100% precision-cut, meaning the groove is physically carved into the vinyl. With proper care, a Loosehair record will be durable, long-lasting and will outlive us all.

Q: How much music can you fit on each side of a record?

A: The approximate recording times per side are listed below. These are general guidelines and can be slightly flexible depending on the sonic properties and dynamics of your mix. Once we receive your audio files, we'll be able to provide a more definite assessment for your specific project.

7" 45rpm ~4 minutes

10" 45rpm ~8 minutes

10" 33rpm ~12 minutes

12" 45rpm ~11 minutes

12" 33rpm ~18 minutes

Q: Are your records stereo? Can you cut mono?

A: Yes, we can cut your records in stereo or mono. Whatever your project needs.

Loosehair's Services & Ordering

Q: Is there a minimum order quantity?

A: No, there's no minimum order here! We specialise in creating custom records in short runs, from a single unit up to 100 copies.

Q: What is a "set-up fee"?

A: The set-up fee covers essential pre-production work to ensure the best possible quality for your vinyl. This includes a basic master of your audio optimised for vinyl cutting, an internal test cut for our quality control, and an A/B comparison (original audio vs. a vinyl rip of the test cut). This rigorous process ensures the transfer to vinyl is true to your sound. This vinyl rip is also what you'll hear on our audio example page. Please note: This fee is often waived for orders over 50 units.

Q: Do you offer audio mastering specifically for vinyl?

A: Yes, we do! We understand the unique requirements of mastering for lathe cut vinyl and can prepare your audio to sound its best once cut.

Q: Do you print sleeves and labels?

A: Yes, we offer both printing services for custom sleeves and record labels! We can also supply blank labels on printable A4 sheets if you prefer to print them yourself. If we're unable to print something specific you require, we'll gladly point you in the right direction.

Q: Do you offer different colour records?

A: We offer a selection of record colours including Black, White, Transparent, and Translucent Red.

All options are available at the same price.

Q: Do you offer picture discs?

A: Yes, we do offer picture discs! These are a fantastic way to add a visual element to your records. Please email us for more details and a quote, as they typically incur a small additional cost per unit.

Q: Do you offer test cuts?

A: We offer both physical and digital test cuts.

Physical Test Cuts: While we do offer these, it's not feasible to provide them for free due to the costs involved (labour, materials, postage & packaging, plus the basic set-up fee). If you proceed with a full order after receiving a physical test cut, you won't be charged the set-up fee again.

Digital Test Cuts: For a quicker and more cost-effective option, we can provide a "digital test cut." This involves cutting your record and then ripping the audio back onto the computer, allowing you to hear the exact sound quality before committing to a full run.

Q: What's your typical turnaround time?

A: Our current turnaround time is approximately 4 weeks from the date of payment. We'll always keep you updated on the progress of your order.

Pricing & Payment

Q: Can I prioritize my order?

A: I’m afraid not. At Loosehair, everyone pays the same price, and no one gets to cut the queue. This ensures fairness for all our customers and allows us to maintain our quality standards.

Q: How transparent is your pricing?

A: At Loosehair, we believe in completely transparent pricing. You won't find any hidden fees or unexpected charges; our invoices clearly detail where your money has gone, ensuring you always know what you're paying for.

Q: How can I pay for my order?

A: Once you've approved your quote, we'll send you a detailed invoice. Payment is required before your project officially begins. We accept payments via bank transfer and PayPal.

Q: How will my records arrive?

A: Once your records are cut they will be securely packaged and dispatched to you. We use an insured courier service, and you'll receive tracking information as soon as your order ships, so you can follow its journey to your door.
