FAQ
Understanding Lathe Cut Vinyl
What's the difference between lathe cut and pressed records?
Lathe cutting is a direct-to-disc method where your audio is cut in real-time onto a blank vinyl record. Traditional pressed records involve multiple stages: first an acetate master is cut, electroplated to create metal stampers, and then stamped into vinyl using hydraulic presses.
Lathe cutting offers a direct, bespoke solution for short runs and individual records, bypassing the complex, high-volume requirements of pressing plants.
Do lathe cut records sound good?
Yes, absolutely! When cut properly, lathe records can achieve sound quality on par with pressed records. At Loose Hair, we focus on precision and quality control, ensuring crisp, clear audio free from excessive surface noise. We pride ourselves on delivering the high fidelity your music deserves.
Is it true that lathe cut records have a shorter lifespan?
This can be true for records that are "embossed" rather than truly cut. However, our records are 100% precision-cut, meaning the groove is physically carved into the vinyl. With proper care, a Loose Hair record is durable, long-lasting, and built to stand the test of time.
How much music can you fit on each side of a record?
These are general guidelines and can flex slightly depending on the sonic properties and dynamics of your mix:
7" 45rpm ~4 minutes
10" 45rpm ~8 minutes
10" 33rpm ~12 minutes
12" 45rpm ~11 minutes
12" 33rpm ~18 minutes
Once we receive your audio files, we will provide an exact assessment for your specific project.
Are your records stereo? Can you cut mono?
Yes, we cut in both stereo and mono depending on what your project requires.
Services & Ordering
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No, there is no minimum order! We specialise in short runs, from a single copy up to 100 copies.
What is a "set-up fee"?
The set-up fee covers essential pre-production work and is included in your quoted price. It includes:
- A basic vinyl-optimised master of your audio
- An internal test cut for quality control
- An A/B comparison (original audio vs. a vinyl rip of the test cut)
(Note: The set-up fee is often waived/reduced for orders over 50 units).
Do you offer audio mastering specifically for vinyl?
Yes! We understand the unique physical requirements of mastering for lathe-cut vinyl and can optimize your audio to sound its absolute best once cut.
Do you print sleeves and labels?
Yes, we offer custom printing for both sleeves and record labels. We can also supply blank labels on printable A4 sheets if you prefer to print them yourself. If we're unable to print something specific you require, we'll gladly point you in the right direction.
Do you offer different color records?
Yes. All vinyl colour options are available at the same price:
- Classic Black
- Solid White
- Clear
- Translucent Red
Do you offer picture discs?
Yes! Picture discs are a fantastic visual option. Please email us for a custom quote, as picture discs incur a small additional cost per unit.
Do you offer test cuts?
We offer two options for test cuts:
- Digital Test Cuts: We cut a test disc, rip the audio directly off the vinyl, and send you the file so you can hear the exact playback response before committing to the full run.
- Physical Test Cuts: We can post physical cuts to you. Because this incurs labor, materials, and P&P costs, it carries an upfront fee; however, if you move forward with the full order, your initial set-up fee will be waived.
What's your typical turnaround time?
Our current turnaround time is approximately 4 weeks from the date of payment. We keep you updated on progress every step of the way.
