Lathe Cut vs. Pressed Records: Which is Right for Your Project?

Deciding how to release your music on vinyl can be daunting. Do you need 500 copies from a plant, or a bespoke short run? Let’s break down the differences so you can make the right choice for your project.
Does the Audio Quality Differ?
A common myth is that lathe cuts sound lo-fi or noisy compared to pressed records. This is true for embossed records but cut records are a completely different ball game.
The truth is, audio quality shouldn’t vary much between lathe cuts and pressed records. If the engineering is done correctly, a lathe cut will be on par with a traditional pressing. You can hear examples of some of our cuts here.
The Real-Time Difference
The main difference isn't sound; it's time.
Pressed records are made using a metal stamper and a hydraulic press. It's fast once set up, but has high upfront costs.
Lathe cuts are handmade in real-time. If your track is 8 minutes long, it takes us about 10 minutes to cut that individual record.
Because we charge based on the time it takes to cut each disc, larger orders of longer records can get pricey.
When to Choose Lathe Cuts vs. Pressing
We specialise in short run vinyl (1–100 records). This is the "sweet spot" for independent artists, limited editions, and labels testing the waters.
If you are looking for 100+ LPs, a pressing plant will be more economical for you. However, for short runs, lathe cuts are King.
