Mastering for vinyl - Crest factor

When mastering for vinyl the crest factor is a big deal.

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of it before.

You can use the free version of Voxengo SPAN to get a crest factor reading.

For vinyl we’re generally looking for a crest factor of 6-10. This is to avoid needle skips and distortion caused by over limiting.

Simply place SPAN on your mastering bus. The last plug-in in the chain and play your track through.

As you can see, we get a few useful readings here. Your crest factor, true peak, and correlation meter.

The lower the number the more compressed your track is.

You can read a brief write up about it over on Spinnertown here.

As always, get in touch if you have any questions.
